I bought this and I hate it. Not as easy to use as my 5 was. Closing apps is a pain. Find the little red button. Anyone else have issues?

You can still just swipe up from the bottom. The red button is just another method, not 'the' new/only way. The new controls work best with a mouse (or Apple Pencil), and the green expand/collapse button is great if you are using stage manager.

If you don't use the multitasking features, you can go to Settings > Multitasking & Gestures, then switch to Full Screen Apps mode. Most of the new controls (along with the new buttons) will go away. One app at a time, like it was in the beginning.

The only real/minor issue I have is going back to Touch ID. I'm so used to Face ID on my phone and large iPad that it takes me a couple moments to figure out why it hasn't already unlocked.

Thanks for the reply. A few of the apps jus5 won’t let me swipe up, like Facebook and a few others. I don’t lock neither of my devices. I’m mostly at home.

That's kind of weird. The swipe to close gesture is not an app feature. It's system gesture and sould work on all apps. That said, I do have a few apps that take two swipes, as if there is something else they want to do. They just bounce a bit on the first swipe, but then the the bar appears at the bottom and the second swipe does the trick.

I don't have FaceBook, so I can't check it out.

Another way to close apps (if you have Stage Manager or Windowed apps on) is to make a short swipe from the top of the screen. The new menu bar should show. Then you can choose File and Close Window. Still a bit awkward without a mouse, but less finicky than the small colored dots.

Even more obscure, but a possible last resort, you can tell Siri to "Go to the Home Screen"

Even more, more obscure, there is a Go to HomeScreen action in the Shortcuts. You could create this shortcut and add it to the Control center. You would need to go to Settings as Control Screen and turn on Enable in Apps for this to work.

It's also possible to get back to the HomeScreen using the Assistive Touch feature in Accesibilty.

I realize than most likely none of these tips help, but I after I went though all the ways I know of to get back to the HomeScreen, I couldn't help but write them down.

Thanks for your response. I think I have the closing app thing worked out. Now I have a problem with one app that my keyboard won’t come up for. And Apple Support on twitter no longer responds.

There is an actual Apple Support app you can download from the App Store. It takes a few steps to get to a real person, but worked well enough the last time I used it. Been a few years though.
