iPad Google Authenticator does not work properly

I'm using Google authenticator on my Droid phone , version 2.24
I'm trying to use Google authenticator on my iPad3 , version 1.1.4.757
Unfortunately iPad authenticator provide code wich is not accepted by Google authentication.
What could be wrong?
What's the reason of this app if it does not work?

What is a "Google authentication" . I have never seen it before but now I cannot get onto google from my ipad. A box comes up asking
for username and password for Google authentication.

Works fine on my iPads, iPhone and iPod touches.
