TUAW reports today on the findings of Dr. Raymond M. Soneira from DisplayMate Technologies, who has analysed the performance of the iPad 2's display, and found that it performs almost as well as the iPhone 4’s Retina display. Dr. Soneira compared the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPad 2, analysing such factors as brightness, black levels, contrast ratio and viewing angles, and he found that in most aspects, the iPad 2’s display produced similar results to the iPhone 4’s Retina display, with both being unsurprisingly better than the iPhone 3GS.

Dr. Soneira says that even though the iPhone 4’s 326 ppi is superior to the iPad 2’s 132 ppi, the pixel density on the Retina display is “overkillâ€, and he also adds that the iPad 2’s display shortcomings, such as its anti-aliasing performance, can be easily fixed with software. Indeed, TUAW points out that developers such as Firemint and Chair have already managed to get a better graphical performance out of their games on the iPad 2 despite the iPad 2’s display resolution being the same as the original iPad. TUAW puts this down to the extra RAM and the extra processing power of the iPad 2.
