What's new

Intro by a puzzled newcomer

Good morning.

I'm an old man but try to keep up with the younger generation. I did some Linux programming for my private use - Assembler, C, Qt, Java, Perl, TCL.

Now my wife acquired an iPad mini whilst normally using an iMac. With the iMac i'm also fairly familiar. But the "mini" baffles me. First of all: How do I get a TERMINAL? And is there a bash preinstalled?

I hope my future questions will be more intelligent after you put me on the right trail.

It's best you understand that iPads run iOS....an operating system designed strictly for Apple tablets & phones with touch screens. You will need to toss out all former notions of how an OS is supposed to work...the iPad is no PC or even a MAC. There is no command line processor (well, as designed) and the closest you can come to a terminal is to get an app like TeamViewer or Spashtop, which let you remote control other PCs using the iPad as a dumb terminal with a touch screen interface. It is best to just understand what an iPad is and what the OS is designed to let you do, and to do things its way. Otherwise, you will simply struggle. You can get a manual for iOS and iPad at the Apple website.
