Ow do you set up iMessages so I can chat with friends?
What do they have to do on their IPhone so I can message with them from my IPad?

They need to be running iOs5 or later, as do you.

You can message them using their phone number, or their email address associated with iMessage.

First, make sure it is running iOs5 or later. iMessage was not available prior to iOs5.

Go to Settings/Messages.

Turn iMessage on.

Scroll down to "Receive at:" and input the email address at which they want to receive iMessages

Their telephone number should already be in the list of recipient addresses.

Make sure you both go to Notifications in Settings and set up your alerts also. You know it's working if your text sends in a blue bubble as opposed to green for normal texts from an iPhone.

The other thing to check is that FaceTime is turned on and linked to an Apple ID. Apparently the two apps are linked, and must both be operational for either one to work. That would be the next thing to look at.

I've never enabled FaceTime. iMessage works great for me. I don't believe there is any link that requires both be operational.

I don't get it. Every device I've set up, iMessage works right away with no problems.

Shouldn't matter which ISP you use. I'm on Telus Mobility 3G, Shaw cable wifi and my overseas contacts are on Virgin Mobile, Vodafone and other godforsaken entities and we use iMessage and FaceTime with never a problem.

Tell her to close her app completely and then relaunch it. From the home double press the home button to reveal your multi task bar. These are all the apps that you have opened at one time. Long press the app until it jiggles and a red minus sign will appear above it. Press the minus sign, this will close the app, not delete it, now press the home button to return to your screen. It's also a good idea to close all these apps. Check and see if it is operating now, if not a restart is in order.

Restart: Press and hold the power off button, the one at the top right. You will see a slide appear to power off, slide this and the screen will go dark and a Whirly will appear. When the Whirly disappears the iPhone is now off. Press the power button again until the Apple logo appears, this will take a few seconds and her iphone will restart. Now see if it is operating. If not a reset is the next step.

Reset: Hold the power off button and the home button simultaneously, keep holding them in and you will see the power off slide appear and disappear, wait until you see the Apple logo appear before releasing the buttons. It will take a little longer for her iPhone to start. This is a reset.

Hopefully this will get it going. Let us know.

Your instructions are to reset her phone to factory, I don't tink she wants to do that. I told her to contact the AT&T store where she bought it from.
