How do I link the AVG adapter to my TV?

Hello there. I bought an AVG adapter for Christmas to link to the TV so my hubby and I could scan the Internet for holidays on a big screen. Is this the right piece of equipment? It has a female end for TV and TV also has female end. Local shop said buy a cable as apple do not supply one. Went bought cable but no joy. What should I have bought to link my ipad2 or my iPhone to the TV? Thanks in anticipation of someone, somewhere knowing the answer.
