What app are you using to read / delete your mail? The built in Apple Mail app? Or are you using Safari?

If you go to your Settings app, under "Mail, Contacts, Calendars," - select your Gmail account. You should get a pop up and at the bottom of it is a place where you can turn off mail Archive. Once that's done, you'll get a Trash can for deleting when you go back to the Mail all.

Hope this clarifies.

Have an iPad2 but not for that long. I ended up dowloading the Google App from iTunes and using the email app from within the Google App. You can check which emails you want to delete, open them to read, mark to move them to different folders -- to me (I'm an Android fan but wanted the iPad to do Facetime with family) it's much easier. Hope this helps.
