Help with calendars

Hi guys, I've just got my iPad 2 and already have the iPhone 4. I'm surprised to see that my neither my contacts nor the data in my calendar sync with the iPad when I sync it via iTunes. It's only the standard calendar Im using and I don't have a mobile me account- do I need to get one?
Any help will be much appreciated.
