Nice summary! Which do you find to be the fastest?

That depends on your PC's processor. I have PC dual core Intel Laptop, it takes about two minutes per one minute of viewing time. So if I am encoding a dvd on Handbrake, it takes 20 minutes to encode a ten minute segment. I tried Handbrake on a quad-core Intel PC and the same ten minute segment took less than ten minutes to encode.

Shout out to PocketAppZ for compiling this list, thank you for providing this list.

You might want to play with some of the more advanced settings with Handbrake.

20 minutes for a 10 minute portion of video, or, 4 hours for a 2 hour DVD on a Dual-Core system is quite slow. Is this when you ripped the DVD to your harddrive first, or using something like AnyDVD/DVDfab along with it?

Some people say that the longer it takes, the better the quality, but there is also something to say for optimized settings. Using a dual-core, you should be able to convert a DVD to a high quality H264 MP4 video file in about hald the time of the length of the actual movie. On my own quad-core, I convert a 2 hour DVD in about 16 minutes or so, and the end result, about a 1.3GB video file looks nearly identical to the actual DVD.

I was looking for a free converter yesterday and noticed that while some of the converters indicated that they were free, they either had conversion limitations as to how much of the video they would convert or they put a watermark on the video. Are these really free or are they trials that limit you in some way unless you purchase the converter?

The ones that do that are a free trail version, so if you like it, you can buy the full version.

To remove the time wasted filtering through these, just go Handbrake.
