Email not working abroad... Please help

I can't send or receive emails when I am abroad.
All accounts work fine when I am in the UK.
My main concern is the Exchange account but Gmail does not work either.
In germany I get “Verify that you have entered the correct account information into the mail settings”.
I have data roaming ON.

Can you Safari or Google your ISP's internet home page, enter your user name and password to get in, and then send/receive emails through that facility?

Thanks Andy, I could do it that way but there must be a solution so I can use the mail app correctly.
