I've noticed recently that the download limit has been raised from 20mb to 50mb,does anyone know why

Well that is good news, I was just reading an article on this. Some apps have doubled in size now that they need to run with the new iPad's Retina display , so this limit had to be increased to allow downloads over 3G. The download limit was increased from 10MB to 20MB when the original iPad was released also.
