I have only had my IPad 2 for four days. I have NOT dropped it. On the third day it had a long crack from top to bottom. It still worked so I did not worry too much, but planned to call Apple the next day. Later that night I was using an app and the the glass shattered. It is totally unusable. I called Apple and the lady on the phone basically told me it was impossible to crack on it's own and I must have dropped it. She also said that no one else had reported anything like that so it was impossible for the glass to be flawed. Thanks for calling me a liar Apple! I wonder if it may have been damaged in shipping and the crack just spread. I think Apple should fix it. I can't believe a company will not fix their product after only a few days of use. Any suggestions on how to get Apple to fix it?

Sorry if I came off in my post as having an attitude. I was trying to communicate my shock at the response the Apple person gave me on the phone. If anyone had an attitude, it was her. Good advice though, I think I will try the store. It is an hour and a half away, but worth a try. thanks

I think the Apple store will take care of it.
Be nice as more to gain with sugar.
If no damage to the case, then no evidence of dropping.
If no evidence of dropping and under warranty, cant see how Thayer won't honor it.

I really don't think you'll have any problem. Apple have been offering, as a courtesy, a one-time only replacement for iPads that were dropped, if there's not evidence of mistreatment. Since yours was clearly not dropped, then I think you can be certain of a replacement. As Marie said, be 'cool' and I'm sure everything will be OK. Should there by any chance be any problem, let us know.

Thanks everyone! You all were correct. I called Apple tonight and they were very nice (as was I) and they are replacing the iPad as a one time courtesy. They said that it may have over heated while plugged in over night since I had the case closed. I plan to get a Zagg shield and an Otter case so this hopefully will not happen again. I looked online and there are a lot of people with a cracked iPad 2. Be careful everyone. Don't get it too hot or drop it. That seems to be the two reasons for cracking.

I hope I'll have the same luck in Switzerland. Woke this morning to find a cracked corner. It's been in a case since day one with no droppage. Heart sank. There are two opposing forces at work in Switzerland. One is a great warranty law and a demand for high quality. The other is horrible customer service, aka the customer is not always right. The first response to a customer returning something is a huge guilt trip and horrible sense of inconveniencing the merchant.

Fingers crossed.

I haven't yet been to the Apple store here, as it's two hours away. But I'll certainly let you know once I deal with this cracked iPad. Hopefully they're the exception to the rule.

I would just call. I am an Hour and a half away from the store. They were very helpful. FedEx sent a box to me in the mail. No charge to me. The Apple rep told me that the battery may have caused it to get too hot since we charged it overnight in the case. I woke up with a crack like you. Good luck!

Good news so far

So I finally got to the Zurich apple store today. I had a rental truck to go pick up some doors in Zurich for a house project, so it was the best time to stop in and ask about my poor iPad. Never mind how impossible it was to find parking for a delivery truck...

They were very busy, and wanted me to make a genius appointment for tomorrow. I explained I live an hour away and have to have the truck back ASAP, and he put me on standby right away. I figured mine was a black or white case- either they replace it or I live with the crack in the corner. The first guy was nice, said no problem, but the genius was a bit touher. Definitely not the guilt trip or inconveniencing feeling, but wasn't about to offer a free replacement. I told him a case was on it since day one, and the drop was from the couch to a wood floor. I was totally honest and nice and easy. And he said "ok that'll be 425 bucks to replace it." I stepped it up a notch and said, "oh, you're going to charge me?" "Yes, it's not covered under warranty." "Well", said I, "I've owned 13 macs and every iOS device they made, etc etc so you guys have a lot of my money, ahem, and I've never seen such a fragile apple product before. Are you sure there's nothing you can do?"

"I'll be right back."

So he cam back and said they'd waive the fee this one time, but I have to come back in two days to pick it up. So I suspect it's a refurb because they seemed to have iPads in stock. We'll see.

The moral is, be nice, honest and ask if you don't get what you want. I was serious- never have I seen such a fragile apple product, and I'm a bit worried about this thin thing they've got going on. I loved the original iPad. Solid as a rock. I've seen people letting their children play with them unsupervised. Not so sure that would go over with the ipad2.
