9to5 Mac reports today on a story in The Korea Herald which says that Apple COO Tim Cook “offered an advance†to top Samsung executives when he was in South Korea recently, in the hope that they would agree to make AMOLED displays for the iPad 3. The Korea Herald’s sources also said that the iPad 3 would be launched towards the end of 2011, with an AMOLED screen if Apple gets its way.

As exciting as the idea of an iPad with an AMOLED screen sounds, 9to5 Mac pours a bucket load of cold water all over the idea, giving several sound reasons as to why the story is unlikely to be credible, such as it being very unlikely that Apple would want to rush another iPad out by the end of the year when they don’t have any need to do so, or the fact that Samsung is unlikely to surrender the honour of being the first company to release an AMOLED tablet to Apple. Surely they would rather keep their own technology to give them an added advantage when selling their own Galaxy tablets? And then there's the small matter of Apple currently suing Samsung and Samsung counter-suing Apple. You never though, stranger things have happened!
