Collectibles - what do you collect.

I know many of us here 'collect' many different things whether through a hobby or just because we just happen to like certain objects.

I have collections which have started from just 1 purchase or gift and not something which I thought about collecting but over time it's just happened and suddenly I have a collection.

So let us know what collections you have and how they came to be.

To start this off I'd like to show you my miniature perfume collection.

My husband gave me a gift of a bottle of perfume for our first date (I still have it, although long empty) and he has always bought me more over the years. The trouble is I'm allergic to many of them and for this reason had to give them away.

He then devised a plan.....before he would buy me a new scent, he would buy me a miniature to try first. So over the years even though I did give many away I've built up quite a collection of them.

The first bottle he bought me Azzaro.....it was my/our favourite scent for many years and sadly they stopped making it.







The bottle he gave me on our Wedding Day - Chanel No. 5 .....sadly I'm allergic to this one which is why it's still full all these years later.

Thank you Andrew! It does look very nice no matter the time of day, and opening the glass doors is even better, all the scents together are very nice....my very own perfume department.....I've always loved walking into a department store by way of the perfume section.

That's quite a collection, leelai! it sure looks like you're going to need more shelf space before long.

Lol.....you know I used to keep them in a very small dark display case less than a quarter the size of my unit now, they were certainly crammed in on top of each other.....just didn't realise I would fill this one so soon!

Hi Leelai - quite an impressive collection - must put off some great aromas!

As for us, Susan collects jewelry (must have a half dozen jewelry boxes and a wall unit that I made for her necklaces - not sure if I've posted pics before but see below). We also have been collecting art for 40 years and the house is filled w/ a LOT of objects and memories from our many trips.

For myself, tools in my basement workshop (have many more than I really need) and 'optical discs', i.e. CDs, DVDs, & BDs (blu-ray discs) - have about 5500 audio discs (4000 being of classical music) & nearly 1500 video discs (700+ purchased & a similar number of 'burned' DVDs from the Turner Classics Movies channel - all of course in the 'public domain').

But, just a few pics - Susan's necklace wall unit 'filled to the brim' (opened & closed) and made by me, the darker wood is mahogany & the lighter 'birds eye' maple. Also a small unit in our foyer w/ some Southwest native Indian pots and on top, a dancing walrus (Inuit) & sculpture made from a whale vertebra (also Inuit); the cabinet was also made by me - cherry wood w/ glass shelves & sides - there is a light under the top that makes the display look quite nice. The thing about collecting wrinkles is that once you start, you can't seem to stop.

I have been collecting Antiques for a long time, I have Victorian Beadwork, Samplers and Textiles, My main collecting interest now is Antique sewing tools, this can be anything from Gold and silver thimbles and thimble holders to Needle cases, Scissors, Mother of Pearl bobbins, Silver needle cases....The list goes on and on as there is no end to this hobby.

Yes, our collections grow more impressive every year. It's our reward for surviving.

It's preferable in every respect to the alternative.

AQ_OC - now, do you really have 2K Blu-ray discs? I've been replacing my DVDs gradually but am up to only about 250 BDs in my video collection of about 1500.

BOY, wife & I use to buy a LOT of books; if we kept them all, I'd have to use a spare bedroom for storage - we give most away to a local elder charity, The Shepherd Center, which has a yearly 'book sale' that makes about $50,000 USD - we are having more difficulty w/ our aging eyes reading printed books, so I'm buying a lot now on my iPad. Well, I was looking at that foyer cherry cabinet posted earlier and the detail of the art pieces on the top were not well seen; so I took a few more pics tonight - the previous photo was an older one - now on the top, are a bear w/ a fish in its mouth (soapstone sculpture; bought in Quebec City on our last vacation there), the dancing walrus (another soapstone sculpture bought in Alaska), and another bear (I think purchased on a trip to Las Vegas). Yeah, embarrassing, huh? A lot of them were deals with Warner bros and cheapo on amazon. If you pay attention, many good deals can be found. I still have some DVDs, but have replaced most now. Some titles still aren't available on blu. And I should have said titles, because many are multi-disc sets. I have also ripped most of these to mkv and have them stored in my movie server.

Having reveal all that, you'd think I watch moves day and night. Not true. I living having then and imagine myself watching them one day. Until I started ripping everything, some of them were unopened. I hope that when I die one of my nieces will be enough of a movie buff to want to take my entire collection.

Now, didn't you say you had 4000 CDs? I have like 250 of those.

Hi Giradman! Such wonderful scents to be sure!

Love Susan's necklaces.....boy she has quite a few! But love the cabinet you've made for them also (yes you did post it once before, but I think the collection of necklaces has grown since then)

Just love your other cabinet also.....something I'd like to try my hand at doing also, well I have made some low book cabinets for my daughters years ago, must be from having a father and a brother who have always done work like this....my brother is a cabinetmaker by trade.
