Can't sign in to apple I'd

I'm having a problem signing into my apple ID on my iPad. Both the password and sign in options are greyed out.

I've tried powering off/0n and also a soft reset to no avail. I've turned off iMessage on my iPhone 4S and back on again. Just thought this might force a message across but again nothing.

How can I get the greyed out areas active again?
