A fascinating story on CBCNews Montreal today about a Montreal man who used a scan of his passport on his iPad to cross the border into the U.S. According to CBCNews, Martin Reisch was driving to Vermont to visit friends for the holidays, and when he reached the border he found that he had left his passport behind. For some reason he happened to have a scan of it on his iPad, and so he showed the scan to the border official, who proceeded to let him cross the border, after initially seeming a little reluctant. Although Reisch was understandably pleased to be allowed to cross the border without having to show his physical passport, some Canadian politicians have expressed their concern that he was allowed to cross the border so easily, such as MP Brian Masse from the NDP, for example, who said that an iPad scan was not a “secure document.†Understandably taking the opposing view, Reisch said that he hopes that in future, using an iPad scan to cross the border will be as commonplace as using digital tickets on your smartphone to gain access to an aeroplane or to a concert.
