9to5 Mac reports today on new benchmark tests carried out by IGN on the new iPad, the iPad 2 and two Tegra 3-powered devices, which had some surprising results. According to 9to5 Mac, the iPad 2’s A5 chip outperformed both the A5X chip in the new iPad and the Tegra 3 in the ASUS Transformer Prime and Galaxy Tab 10.1 in some of the tests. It would seem that this is because the new iPad’s A5X improved graphics chip is mainly used to power the new iPad’s Retina display. 9to5 Mac notes that the A5X chip only has a “significant increase†in performance in comparison to the iPad 2’s A5 chip and the Tegra 3 during “off-screen†benchmark tests, when the chip is not required to power the new iPad’s Retina display. In terms of “raw CPU powerâ€, the Tegra 3-powered devices outscored both of the iPads in GeekBench.
