AVCHD Conversion on the Fly?

I would like to use my IPAD camera kit USB adapter to play my Sony camcorders AVCHD video format from it's pro-duo card. It does recognize all the pictures taken by the camera and will import those, however, the video files just show as picture thumbnails and nothing else.

It would be great if anyone knows how to have the ipad convert the AVCHd format to mp4 to play on ipad on the fly without having to do all this on my mac just to view a video quickly. Would something like Air Video work?

Any help appreciated.

not for the iPad. This happens on the computer. I use Vegas Pro for video editing and conversions.
