Autolock & Passcode question

I have a new iPad 2 as well as an iPhone 4. Both have autolock set for 5 minutes and i have a passcode set up for both.

On my iPhone I do not have to enter the passcode unless the phone has been off for more than 5 minutes. On my iPad it asks me to enter the passcode every time I turn it back on even if it has been off for only a few seconds.

Is this the way the iPad is normally set up? Can I change something in Settings so it will only ask for the code after 5 minutes?

My passcode turned itself on!! For real. It has never been on until today. I could simply slide the bar and go right in. Now the "turn passcode off" button is grayed out along with "simple passcode" option. HELLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPP! Shortly, before this change I added a mail account. The email account password somehow became the ipad2 passcode???

After frantically trying passcodes until I guessed that one, I was able to change it to something easy. But i really don't need security on my ipad2 like that. Any advice is appreciated.
