The iPhone and the iPad are especially popular in their homeland, the United States. Now, according to a new report from analytics firm Chitika, Apple’s iPhone gained mobile web traffic share in North America during the holidays, seeing a 1.8 percent jump from the period between December 20 and December 29. The iPhone has a 54.3 percent share of total mobile web traffic while the iPad has remained the most popular tablet with 76.1 percent of all mobile web traffic in North America.

Apple experienced diverging fortunes when it came to post-Christmas usage share changes in 2013. The iPhone was the only smartphone to exhibit usage share gains in the wake of the holiday (+1.8%), likely indicating that its latest set of 5S and 5C devices remained a hit with consumers. Meanwhile, the iPad’s tablet usage share slipped by 1.3 percentage points against its competitors, which could be partially due to the tablet’s higher price point directing people to other brands for the purposes of gift giving. However, in both the smartphone and tablet spaces, Apple users still generate the highest share North American Web traffic as compared to any other manufacturer.

In late 2012, Chitika published a similar study, noting that iOS had an overall usage share of 67 percent, compared to Android’s 33 percent share. We recently shared with you a report from IBM which was showing the majority of online shopping from mobile devices during the Christmas holiday coming from iOS users rather than Android users.
