Apple Said to be Working on Bringing Public Transit Directions Back into its Maps App for iOS

According to a fresh Apple job listing spotted by AppleInsider publication, it seems that Apple is interested in bringing back public transit directions data into its mapping application. It has been more than three years since Apple has abandoned data from Google Maps, and now it seems that the company is looking to deal with this on its own.

The job listing says Apple is searching for a software engineer who will join the Maps division's Routing team. Apple informs those looking to apply that "as a member of the Routing team, you will work on one of the most anticipated features of Apple Maps."

Apple is looking for someone with "in-depth knowledge about public transit," both as a rider and on a technical level. The best moment for Apple to announce a potential Maps upgrades could be at this year's Worldwide Developers Conference, which starts June 8.

But even with this new job listing, it’s unclear when transit data will become available in Apple Maps. Public transit information was available on iPhones and iPads until the update to iOS 6 in 2012, when Apple decided to replaced Google’s mapping data with its own. Ever since, the Cupertino-based company has been striving to improve its service so that it could prove to be a real competitor to Google Maps.
