Any chance of getting order BEFORE 4-5 week?

Do they give out the 4-5 weeks number to give themselves more room and then deliver early? or is it actually a realistic time-frame?

Also, how do you check on the status of your order? Is it through the Apple site?

Considering the Quake I would be surprised if you see one in 10 weeks. With the number of parts coming from Japan all it takes is one to stop the process.

Probably not. Not only the quake/tsunami delaying parts, but the international launch is still scheduled for the 25th unless I missed an announcement. So that will divert a ton of units from the US.

People... the Shipment for the 25th was on the Boat and the Boat on the ocean right before the tradegy in Japan happend.
Ships take weeks from far east to US/Europe so theres no way the 25th wont be release for Europe.
The big question is the quantity of the shipment at the 25th, which like everyone thinks is bad ass small compared to the all the people who wanna get an IPad2.

Really? Apple still ships their units by ships?

I recall reading an article last year stating that companies such as Apple use airplanes for transporting mobile devices, such as the iPhone and iPad due to the ever falling hardware prices. So they want to sell the products as fast as possible and rather pay slightly higher shipping prices then wait weeks for a product which is already outdated on arrival.

Regardless, the iPad is assembled and exported from China.

None of these have been on ships yet. Apple has been flying them in.

Mine flew from Hong Kong to Alaska, then few from there to Memphis, then flew to Atlanta and got on a truck to my door in the city a few hours after arriving in ATL.

This is a bummer. I seriously doubt the tsunami had that big of an impact on apple's supply chain. It sounds like an excuse to delay the ipad further

hey apple, sorry i didn't have the time to stand in line for 12 hours--but could you please hurry along so the rest of us can get one? thanks

Steve Jobs is pleased with this thread. Steve Ballmer and Eric Schmidt can learn lots from Steve Jobs.

I really doubt that the devices are being shipped by plane,

i agree that they would be if there preorders, cause those apple will bring as fast as possible.

But since theres a fixed date for the first release AND theres a BIG number of devices which could take a handful of planes (and airshipment costs way more) i think that the shipment with the fixed date is by ship.

Further ones might go by plane cause people are waiting. It has to ship faster.

And for the tradegy in Japan, i really believe they got alot of all the parts they need to assemble the Device already in china.

For the car industry its a mess, well, car parts are way bigger than electronic chip-parts and take a whole lot more storage room.
Storage room reduction is what happend big time in germany due 2000-2010 so theres almost assembly on demand and a quick lack of parts if they cant be shipped from source countrys.
And alot car parts are from Japan it seems.

And even if there alot of chips from Japan, i think alot are already produced, maybe there will be a lack in the 3rd or 4th big shipment.

They are coming by plane.

Per the Fed Ex tracking mine left Hong Kong just around 8pm local time there on the 14th, went through Alaska and then Memphis and then onto Atlanta and got delivered to me at noon on the 15th. Plus with Apple stores getting them every few days, hard to imagine they are coming on boats.

Here's the full FedEx tracking info.

the accessories are not an issue, its the parts in the ipad that may be delayed. Even before the whole incident in Japan I was having doubts that they would meet their already extended shipping times. Got in an apple store like at 4:45 a.m. this morning and got the last wifi version

They are coming by plane. One look at tracking tells you that. If they were coming by ship the ipad3 would be announced before they got here.
