According to the results of a Nielsen survey published today, which polled a general population sample in the United States, 31 percent of American kids aged 6-12 place Apple’s iPad at the top of their list of electronic items that they have most interest in buying over the next six months. Computer and iPod touch are in joint 2nd place at 29 percent, and the ever-popular Nintendo DS comes in third at 25 percent. The highest placed next-gen console is the Sony PlayStation 3 at 21 percent, with Microsoft’s Xbox 360 surprisingly coming in second-from-bottom at 12 percent.

For those aged 13 and upwards who were also polled, computer tops the list with 20 percent, followed closely by television set and non-iPhone smartphone, which placed joint second at 19 percent. iPad was third with 18 percent. So, with impressive showings among both age ranges, it would seem safe to say that the iPad’s first holiday season will be an extremely profitable one for Apple!

I always resisted buying my kid a game console, but since we can BOTH enjoy the iPad, and the games are inexpensive AND well-written, it seems like a win-win. Not sureprised at this research.
