Hold power + home until the screen goes black then release both and hold volume up during reboot until it finishes booting. This disables substrate entirely so you can remove whatever tweak is incompatible with your current build.

Not true and not true... I had to restore my 3 which was never jailbroken but my 2 which was jailbroken on 5.0.1 updated and was jailbroke fine without a restore. The 3 took 15 tries before I had to restore but the 2 jailbroke on the first try.

Well before you do a factory reset try a few things first that I've found to help in the past. 1) turn off your wifi... sometimes apps are sending/receiving data and I've found it can hang up the JB tool. 2) do a hard reset of the iPad. This will clear anything in the cache that might hang it...

You could try putting it into DFU mode and restoring it to wipe before you sell it. Screens aren't costly or time intensive to replace though. Less than $50 US and 2 hours of your time and you can have it going.
