Another alternative is to carry a travel router with you that allows you to create a new personal hotspot from an existing Wi-Fi network. With the travel router you can setup any encryption you want, and only connect the devices you give the passkey to.
What if you used a travel router to create a new network from the public wi-fi connection provided by Starbucks? Would that secure your connection, or would people still be able to intercept the data once it leaves your travel router and into the Starbucks network?

Yeah, I have used a JB iPhone and did not notice a difference than the ones locket to AT&T. I think I am too used to the Android phones I have used. I was looking at getting a Widows 7 phone (my AT&T contract is up and I already have a Droid through work).
