Recently I copied a few PDFs into iBooks from Windows via Dropbox, and then deleted the files on Dropbox. Little did I know that the files on Dropbox were my only Windows copies (I thought drag-and-drop on Windows to Dropbox would copy the files, not move them). So now I need to get those files...

Noticed that too, they say the in app option is time-limited but a reviewer mentioned it as well (don't know how old that review is though). Probably wouldn't have gone with the full price option if that was the only one.

I think it's subscription only if you want full use of synchronization with their web service, which I don't. But in any case I bought iThoughtsHD (everyone's favorite), and also SimpleMind.
