Having problems connecting to friends. My friends can send me messages but I cannot load them, other than Earl. Any ideas?

Very new to using iPad2 and bought Belkin keyboard case with it. Unable to get the keyboard and iPad synced. Anyone able to help? No instruction leaflet in book Thank you chaps Nicki
