Why do I suddenly have the number 7,348 next to mail icon but have only 2 in inbox? They are probably all I have on iMac but they are certainly slowing ipad. Please help.

I'm very new at the iPad although i've been using a Mac for more years than I can remember and probably before you were born. I'm sure you'll beable to solve all my problems.
