Never mind- found the answer in a similar thread in the forum I did a soft reset - open the page, then hold the sleep bitten until you see the unlock screen, then hold the home button and it returns to the home screen, then try to open the mail app. It worked ....

Help- someone sent me an email from his alternate address, I clicked on his name at the top to save it, clicked add to existing contact and now the mail app is frozen in the darkened screen, however it is still receiving emails into the Inbox talk about frustrating. I checked my mail settings...
