When I turned off the sync set up all my notes disappeared, I have to turn on the sync to see it again. What do I do so I don't have to turn the sync on?

my gmail is set up i both my ipad2 and my laptop what i dont understand is why everytime I check my mail in my laptop I get emails from myself with the notes (from the notes app) attached to the e-mail.... help why is it doing that????:mad::(

can the smart cover be washed/cleaned, mine is orange so it gets dirty kinda fast??
