    You can not compeare an iPad with an external drive ! If you put a few movies and music on the iPad you will quickly use a lot of GB. I think 16 GB is too less, certainly when they are going to use it with 2

    I use the FileBrowser app (App Store - FileBrowser - Access files on remote computers) to access network folders on Macs, Windows, Linux, and NAS drives. I find it very usefull.

    I use Handbrake to convert movies for myiPad. It is free and it works on Mac as well as on Windows.
