Numbers Application - can you modify current excel spreadsheets?

I was wondering if anyone would let me know how useful the Numbers application is when it comes to modifying saved excel spreadsheets? i want to access a saved document in my dropbox account and modify it. please help, it would be much appreciated.

While I love Numbers, it is not the best choice if you are going to keep moving documents back and forth between Excel and the iPad, especially using DropBox which takes some workaround to play nice with Numbers.

Documents to Go is probably your better choice, though others like QuickOffice better. Here are a couple of reviews by other members that may help you make up your mind.
