Syncronizing is not the same as doing a backup.
Backup can be set up in Settings, iCloud, Memory (?) and Backup - there it will backup also wirelessly. (sorry, OS in German)

I. Have had a differing problem. My iPad is backing up daily but not syncing. Found I had to tick a box in iTunes to get it to sync---- and am still not convinced it has😜
