About LinkBacksHi, my wife is thinking of buying an e reader, if she does is there anyway I can buy books from Apple as normal & then transfer them to the e reader?

No. Books purchased from Apple in iBooks have a copy protection scheme (DRM) which prevents them from being read in other eReaders
