Hi.
I've just got an iPad 2 and been motivated to join here.
My main activity in life, work, is writing software for real time information systems integrating messaging, databases and specialised Point of sale type devices. In my spare time I also write software for scientific applications. The main one being simulation of Bayesian reasoning in the mammalian cortex.
I live in Surrey with my wife of over 30 years.

I am interested in far too many things. Too easily distracted to progress most. Recently embarked on learning quantum mechanics from ground up. This is hard. My blog was on live spaces until Microsoft betrayed it's users by kicking them onto Wordpress which is too hard to use. Now it is at zotric on blogspot.

Having owned many pc and other computing devices for 30 years plus, I think the iPad is groundbreaking. Beautifully made and a joy to use. Its mobility, elegance and robustness seem outstanding.
I do long for cursor controls though. Trying to position the cursor is a frustrating mess as the man said.

Good to hear from you. You’ll find a whole bunch of iPad enthusiasts in this Forum who are only too willing to help other iPad owners and to hear of their experiences. Don’t be afraid to post any questions you may have or use the ‘Search’ button near the top of the Forum web page. I usually find I discover one new interesting and useful piece of information about my iPad every day - and often not even what I was looking for!!

To position the cursor more easily, touch and hold the screen and a little pop-up magnifying glass will appear, making it easier to position the cursor.

Good luck with the quantum mechanics - it's really at the heart of the iPad.

Bayes' theorem |bāz| Statistics
a theorem describing how the conditional probability of each of a set of possible causes for a given observed outcome can be computed from knowledge of the probability of each cause and the conditional probability of the outcome of each cause.

And Wordpress is hard? Maybe I should stick to Blogger then.

Haven't looked at this for a while so it was time I did. Bayesian reasoning works out an estimate of the chances of something being the case based upon other things it knows about. Furthermore the estimates can be revised in light of new information. Despite having produced valuable results in other respects it appears, from what I have read, that many AI programs cannot revise estimates effectively. Most reasoning programs can only revise beliefs using ad hoc rules. It gets better. It appears that circuits in the brain could be doing just this kind of reasoning. A contentious claim but a good thing to try.
