I tried in crete several times to use different free wifi connections each location came up on the ipad but wouldn't work when i tried to use it. Do you have to have any particular settings when abroad to pick up the wifi?

When you tried to join the WiFi network, did it have the little lock symbol by the side of the network name, when you looked under 'Settings', 'WiFi'?

If it did, then it's not a free network, but perhaps belongs to the shop or hotel and is for their internal use. Even if it doesn't have that symbol, it's still not necessarily free - it could be a 'public' hotspot, but still one you need to pay for. In those cases, when you fire up Safari, it usually takes you through to the service provider's website where you'll be invited to sign up for a particular service - perhaps by the hour or day.

There's no easy way of identifying a truly free WiFi hotspot unless there's a sign up indicating that it's free. Also, some free WiFi hotspots in franchises - such as Starbucks or some airlines - require you to obtain the password from the sales desk - it's an attempt to prevent those who are not customers gaining free access when they're not patrons.

Mine worked in Africa last week. Had to log into the particular access point, but no probs after that.

International WiFi

I travel a lot to Europe, US, South and Central Americas. WiFi networks work the same way everywhere.
