Just learning about this iPad.. Was wondering if I'm in a wifi zone and I'm also on 3G net work at the same time and decide to download something does my iPad automatically use the wifi to avoid data charges.?? Thanks

Yes, wifi always takes precedence over 3G. You can tell your connected to wifi by the quarter circles radiating in the top left of your iPad.
