No, and unless these files exist only on your Ipad, then no to the second query as well. That being said you should still be keeping at least one backup of your files outside of the copies on your actual computer system.Will updating to ios5 wipe my iPad? Will I need to back up pics, apps, etc?

FWIW Apple has multiple data centers.It's all speculation. Apple has never announced a time but people are guessing 10am Pacific time - mid morning in CA and just after lunch at the data center in NC
