Hi, powernut! Welcome to iPF!

You find the details (model, internet connection, GB) on the box where your device was delivered in (outside, bottom). To identify your iPad, look at this screenshot:

Apple

On the back cover of your device, you'll find the Model number. A 1475 means that your iPad has Wi-Fi and cellular connection feature. A 1474 is Wi-Fi only.

Your iPad will work well with Wi-Fi only, if you don't have an iPad Wi-Fi + cellular.

If you purchased your device from a provider, it will be locked. This means it will only work with a SIM card from this provider.
An unlocked iPad with Wi-Fi + cell. can be used with every SIM card.

Johanna, unlike iPhones, the iPad air with WiFi + cellular is not carrier locked. This means that you can activate it with the carrier of your choice. Look at this page from Apple. http://www.apple.com/ipad-air/ultrafast-wireless/

I use my mini Ipad with wifi only all the time when out and about!

Most hotels, pubs and chains of coffee shops offer free wifi, so you can easily pop in and use it for the price of a cup of coffee, or even sit in the lounge of a hotel as if you are waiting for one of their guests to meet you and get your emails etc.

In the UK all the services on the motorways and major routes offer free wifi. All MacDonalds, burger Kings and other fast food restaurants also have free wifi.

Even our little local cafe has free wifi for its customers.

So if you keep your eyes open you can easily find somewhere to use your wifi-only Ipad

Well, you could always take it back and exchange it (with more money, of course :)) for the Air that has cellular capabilities. Then, with that, and a cellular plan, you'll be able to use it wherever you go.

What if your iPad has no model number on the back? Mine has nothing but the apple logo.

Thanks

It's also on the box. See the details in my first post in this thread.

An easier way to identify it: go to Settings. If you find this

image-3664989675.jpg

then it's Wi-Fi + cellular. If there's no SIM card installed, Cellular Data will be visible but greyed out, afaik.

If it's Wi-Fi only, you won't find Cellular Data in Settings.

I bought it used off eBay so there is no original box. Under About the model says MC960LL/A and under Version is 7.0.2 (11A501). No Carrier. My concern is that a search on the Internet and I find nothing about a iPad with nothing on the back. Every article I found says to identify it by the model number, I.E. A1395, stamped on the back. None of them say anything about what to do if you have nothing on the back.

According to this number "MC960LL/A" in your post, you have a 16GB WiFi iPad 2.
