I have no documentation to back it up but when the iPod first came out it was advertised as a truly personal device, the i in ipod was, in essence, for "my personal music player" . It was perfect for the narcissistic generation that was emerging at about the same time.

The first i was the iMac, and for marketing purposes it stood for internet.
