Had quite a musical time lately.

Saw Chris de Burgh in concert a couple weeks ago.

Last night I went to see the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra playing work by Françaix, Debussy and Vaughan Williams.

Spent most of today listening to Elgar (Symphony Nr 1 and Enigma Variations), Vaughan Williams 5th Symphony (same one as last night), followed that with Beethoven's 3rd (which I hope to hear by the ESO in November), then the 9th.

Presently listening to Beethoven's 6th, transcribed for piano by Franz Liszt.

Hmm. The 6th finished while I was typing, so onward with the 7th, not that I need much excuse.

I'm sorry to say, the Elgar First was the only time I ever fell asleep in a live symphony concert. I was not alone, either.

My favorite Beethoven 6 is Bruno Walter's on Columbia: the pace is just so right, it makes all the rest sound hurried or sluggish. IMHO, of course. Overall, though, for Beethoven symphony sets you must hear the René Leibowitz Readers Digest box (or the Chesky reissues). They are probably the most literal and least "improved" interpretations on record.
