Apps are sandboxed, the only spam you may get is in email. I feel that the anti-virus and malware protection apps are unnecessary on iOS - though their developers probably don't want users to believe that. The weakest link in the computer security chain, in my opinion, is the user.

My daughter is also aged six and is quite proficient with many of the apps.
I've tried to balance the games with the many educational apps.
    Her favorites are:
Coloring+ (paid app but well worth it)
    Temple run
    Pocket climb
    Monkey maths
    Math board
    Hangman

    I enjoy flipboard and iBooks

    Enjoy your search

You're all going to love the iPad. Download Appshopper it's another way to browse for apps. You can also input a wish list and when an app comes on sale it will alert you. A great way to get paid apps free. I've had many cooking Apps, all free ones but I bought Paprika the other day, just love it!, here are some links also.
