Use the "File Sharing" feature of Itunes (under the "Apps" section). VLC has an entry there for you to add files.

I tried it with four files: two HD .AVI files, one .MKV and one .FLV. Only the .AVI files were playable, one displayed unacceptable slide-show performance, and one kept crashing.

    Thumbs-down from me.

I got a warning that was telling me that my iPad is too slow for this file (the one that played at slide-show speed.)

But after that, I tried a video that was formatted .MP4 and plays well in GoodReader. But VLC Player started slowly playing choppy video then crashed.

Give it a pass - for now. I use VLC Player on my Windows PC, and it is pretty good. It is just not ready for iPad use.

I tried a few mp4 files and they were fine (but they would have been fine on the iPad anyway!). I then added a wmv file, some flv files and a mkv file. Now the app crashes immediately after launch! Over and over again! I'll be curious to hear if others have the same experience...I certainly didn't expect this from vlc.

Same here, mkv file crashes immediately.

How do you delete a VLC file? Does it get delete if you delete the app?

I deleted the app ( and yes...deleting the app also deletes the files.). I reinstalled and like before, the mp4 files seem fine. I tried adding one flv file and even though iTunes synched it, it's nowhere to be found in the vlc app on the iPad. IMHO...a pretty useless app so far.

Is there an easy way to play avi (xvid or whatever) files on the Ipad? I don't want to have to convert everything to Apple's format.

You can stream them from your computer with Air Video.

Yea, its pretty much useless. It doesn't use hardware acceleration.

I just read a review of this software, on TUAW I think. They said it doesn't use any hardware acceleration. And it won't do .flv of course, or it would not get by Apple App screening.

    Very Beta.

All of my video is seen one of three ways:

    1) iTunes syncing
Movies that I want to convert and keep and take with me.

    2) GoodReader
Movies that I want to watch once or twice but taking it with me would be nice. Sports falls into this category the most Some conversion may be necessary.

    3) Air Video
This app plays anything, and I mean ANYTHING. The disadvantage is that it is effectively WIFI only and your computer needs to be running.

I was hoping that VLC Player would simplify this a bit, but it appears not to be ready.

I have been using ZumoCast. The only things I have found so far it won't play are files that are DRM protected. It streams video files from your computer, or you can download files wirelessly.

I've replaced AirVideo with Zumocast as the latter also gives access to my docs and pictures as well as stream video.

They've put it out way too soon.. :(

I've downloaded app and tried a short mkv file, but it gave me a note:
"Yor iPad is probably too slow to play this movie correctly."

You can still say: TRY, but it is hopeless.

Whoa.. Weren't they aware of the speed of an iPad?? there aren't any
    variations of it yet :)

I haven't tried simple .avi as I have CinexPlayer for that, which - luckily has not refused to play many files for me.
Plus even the ones Cinexplayer refuses, just run through Avimux and everything works fine again.

The other annoying thing is that you can only delete a film/file through iTunes, which is shabby again.

Zumocast is one of my favorite app - it works fine and is easy to setup.
