A friend of mine and I were chatting recently. He told me that recently there was a virus identified on iPads. Has anyone heard any such news, or is it a vicious rumor?

It's a rumor. As of right now, there is no virus active against the iPad.

Not to say that there will never be one. But, for now, thanks to Apple's sandboxing, the iPad is virus-free.
