Using Ipad in Europe

Hi all,
Just registered with the forum and hope you can advise me !
Want to buy the IPad Air with 3G and specifically want to be able to use it in Europe. John Lewis suggested a PAYG sim card as I will only be out of the UK for about 2 weeks every 2/3 months or so. Just spoken to Carphone Wharehouse who tell me I can't just use my UK sim in Europe and I'd have to purchase access whilst there. Have to admit to being a bit confused ! Can anyone tell me the exactly how it would work ? I didn't want to pay for a monthly contract when I don't need it continuously (though that may work out cheaper in the end !)

I've heard this site mentioned favorably in a podcast. It was mentioned as convenient, not as the cheapest, so do some more research before committing.

And that would be the extend of my knowledge. A few other people here do some traveling, so they may have better advice.
