will the ipad 2 from the us work in the uk

There are two 'flavours' of iPad sold in the US - the Verizon model and the AT&T model. The Verizon model uses a 3G protocol that is not supported outside the US and a few other countries. The AT&T iPad uses GSM and that will work anywhere. WiFi-only iPads bought in the US are fine too.

So - WiFi-only iPad - no problem.
3G iPad - only purchase the AT&T model, which works fine in the UK.
