Updating the iPad 1

I have the iPad 1 with version 4.2.1 on it
I wanted to buy photomgrpro and it says I need version 4.3
How do I update? And is there a higher version I should go to now
Will I lose any of my things.

Why would I want to buy the new iPad.

Just go into iTunes select your iPad and click update you will get ios5 but as long as your backed up and sync your iPad with your computor it should be the same but have an more advanced software version with more features

I am sorry but still do not understand.
I did go to itunes on my computer, I attached my ipad and it backed up.
But now what do i do.
When i went to itunes, i do not see where you say i should select my ipad.
I am not very tech savvy.

It should be on the left hand side of itunes with your iPad name under devices. Click on the name and it will go into your device menu

Library
Store
Shared
Genius
Playlists
I do not see any devices or ipad
