I have connected the iPad-to-USB thingy with the hope of copying doc and ppt files from my flash drive to my iPad BUT nothing happens. I don't see an icon for the flash drive or anything ... Help!

Outside my iPad, or was it inside?
It is not possible to access a flash drive from the iPad. There is a reason, why the USB adapter is called "camera connection kit", because it let's you connect a camera to it, nothing else.

Now, if your iPad is jail broken, you could install from the Cydia AppStore and circumvent this restriction. But on a non-jb iPad, that is not possible.

It is not possible to copy files from a USB memory stick to an iPad. Only a few very USB sticks work with the iPad and even then you can only copy photos and videos and not doc and ppt files. You will have to transfer them using a PC - i.e. copy the files to your PC and then either email them to yourself on the iPad or transfer them using a cloud storage facility, such as Apple's MobileMe iDisk.
