According to the report, TSMC is expecting to manufacture 120 million Touch ID units this year, representing a 233% year-over-year increase, as the Touch ID sensor moves from just the iPhone to other Apple devices. MacRumors says that TSMC is expanding its 8-inch chip plant to cope with the increased demand.
Sources in Apple’s supply chain say that TSMC will begin delivering the new Touch ID units to Apple as soon as early July, with production levels for the third quarter being double that of the second quarter.
MacRumors says that the new Touch ID for iPad will be similar to that of the iPhone, and will support the new features that will be introduced with iOS 8, whereby third-party apps can also access the fingerprint scanner.
