The iPad still reigns supreme in the UK, according to a new survey from eMarketer, as reported on by ITProPortal. In fact, these new figures reveal that over one third of the UK population will use a tablet of some sort this year, with 20 million people in the UK using a tablet at least once a month. The figures include people who own their own tablet, as well as those who share them with friends, family, or work colleagues. Based on these findings, eMarketer predicts that by 2017, more than half of the UK population will be regular tablet users.

And that is good news for Apple, of course, because eMarketer’s figures also reveal that Apple still rules the UK tablet market, with a 59 % market share, although they predict that the picture will not be so rosy for Apple next year, with the iPad’s growth rate set to fall sharply, thanks to the influx of a new wave of budget tablets, such as the Amazon Kindle Fire, and Tesco’s Hudl tablet.

“One reason the tablet audience is growing is the increased availability of low-end tablet alternatives,†said eMarketer. “Many consumers who are reluctant to pay for expensive models have yet to adopt tablets.â€
